My love for antiques started here. It started with this yellowware bowl. This is the bowl my mother had as far back as I can remember. She used this bowl on special occasions and holidays. She used this bowl for potato salad. That's the only thing I ever saw my mother serve in this bowl. It was a family recipe passed down from Aunts and Grandmothers, going all the way back to Germany where my mother's side of the family was from. Over the years I have collected nearly thirty pieces of yellowware, but this bowl is special and it became a part of our family history.
There are only a few things in our family that have been passed down from one generation to the next. In fact, I can only think of four of them. Our family moved around a lot so things got broken or, more often than not, just left behind. Of the four things that I know that has survived is a box of family recipes, one of my grandmother's handmade quilts, my great-grandmother's cameo brooch, and of course that yellowware bowl. Out of the four things still around, I have three of them.
It wasn't just these family treasures that inspired my love for antiques and vintage decor. My big sister played a major role in that too. Antiques are something that she has always loved and collected too. She was also drawn to their unique charm starting at a very young age. We've always shared that special bond and I can remember while I was growing up she was always taking me with her to flea markets and antique stores. We would scammer off on a random Tuesday night and go to the local auction house where we would watch and sometimes bid on somebody else's forgotten heirlooms. That's when my hunger for antiques really began to foster.
I was just 14 years old in 1985 when my sister decided to leave her full time job and follow her dreams. She had always wanted to have her own antique store, a little shop filled with country decor and salvaged finds. I would spend every weekend and my summers working along side her learning about various collectibles and the inner working of the business. We also handmade many goods. We built and painted primitive furniture, made hand sewn dolls and pillows. We would travel all over the Midwest and comb through thrift stores, go to estate sales, and rummage through old barns. Like scavengers we would hunt down anything we could to take back to our store to sell.
It's what we love. It's in our blood. It's who we are!
Over the next eight years her business became "our" business. Along with her husband we would go on to open three stores while setting up at different shows and selling our goods at various markets. By this time I was in my early twenties and the daily grind of running the business was starting to take a tole on me. I was beginning to get the urge to try something else. I decided to leave our business and move on to something new. I thought I wanted a change. I know now I just needed some direction.
In 2014 I had a friend who sent me a text with a picture of an old dresser that she had found. It was missing two of the four drawers and it was in rough condition. She was hoping to salvage the dresser and repurpose it into a cabinet for her living room. She contacted me because she knew I use to do things like that, salvage and refinish antiques and old furniture. I agreed to help and as I'm sure you can guess that rekindled my passion for all things old and junky. This simple weekend project inspired me to return to the one thing I really love. It was as if I had rediscovered my lost heritage.
In 2015 I decided to take a leap and I opened a small booth in a local antique mall. That small booth turned into a larger booth and it wasn't long before I realized that I wanted something more. In 2018 I started to explore the idea of reopening my own store but decided a brick and mortar wouldn't be the same without my sister. That is when the idea to create this online store was born. In the summer of 2019, with the help and support of my inner circle, I launched my online shop.
